Robert H. Malstrom, M.D.

Dr. Malstrom is a Board-certified Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in surgery and medical treatment of the shoulder, knee and hip.  His practice focuses on these key areas:

  • Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery

  • Major Knee Ligament Repair and Reconstruction

  • Major Joint Replacement and Extremity Rehabilitation

  • Cartilage Regeneration of the Knee (through Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation [ACI])

Among the many surgical innovations Dr. Malstrom has introduced to his practice is the Minimally Invasive Solutions (MIS™) technology, used in joint replacement of the knee and hip, which reduces tissue trauma and can thus shorten patients’ rehabilitation time.  In addition, he has adopted several new methods for reduction of perioperative pain, including the use of local anesthetic infusion devices.  He is committed to eliminating as much as possible the pain experienced following surgery.

He is a member of the Medical Staff of the ValleyCare Health System hospitals in Pleasanton and Livermore, San Ramon Regional Medical Center and Sutter Tracy Community Hospital.

Additional Information

After serving in the U.S. Navy as a physician, orthopedic surgeon and clinical investigator, Dr. Malstrom began practicing in the Tri-Valley area in 1985.  He was appointed and served as Chief of Medical Staff at ValleyCare Health System from November of 1994 to November 1996.  He then became Chairman of the Board of ValleyCare Health System from January 1997 to July 1999.

In addition to his busy practice, Dr. Malstrom was the Athletic Team Physician at California State University Hayward, from 1987 to 1995, as well as a consultant for the Student Health Services from 1985 to 1995.  He currently serves as team physician to Dublin High School.

Although Dr. Malstrom has a very busy professional life, and participates in several medical societies and associations, he finds time for his special hobbies, the restoration of vintage Packard automobiles, and participation in a Car Club and Car Shows.  Most recently, Dr. Malstrom has taken to the sky and has successfully become a pilot.  He enjoys flying as a real change of pace from his active lifestyle on the ground.
