Arthroscopy The first generation of minimally invasive surgery, Arthroscopy, has been used and continually refined by Tri-Valley Orthopedic Specialists’ practice leaders for nearly 20 years. Utilized for a variety of joint problems, arthroscopy decreases both surgical and rehabilitation times and allows patients to return to their normal activities much more quickly than they could with traditional “open surgery”. All of our physicians are practice leaders for Arthroscopy. Each is dedicated to eliminating as much as possible the pain experienced following surgery, and to rehabilitative processes which effectively decrease recovery time. How arthroscopy works: Arthroscopic surgery is a minimally invasive technique which requires several small incisions about the size of a button hole. The pencil-shaped “arthroscope” uses a miniature lens and a fiberoptic lighting system to illuminate structures inside the area being treated (shoulder, knee, etc.). Using small surgical instruments, surgery may be completed while the surgeon views the area being repaired on a television screen. Once the procedure is completed, the patient is usually allowed to return home the same day. At Tri-Valley Orthopedic Specialists, a customized rehab/physical therapy program involving range of motion and strengthening exercises is begun immediately, allowing the patient to return to a full range of activities within several months.
